The department of public health sciences (PHS) prepares students to lead, manage or pursue advanced studies in aging services, senior living, health administration, clinical healthcare and public health. PHS offers a comprehensive education through both in-person and online learning communities. Whether pursuing a minor, certificate, bachelor's or accelerated master's degree, PHS provides flexible options to meet students at any stage of their academic journey.

Credit for Prior Learning
PHS awards life experience credit. The department requires that the learning from life experience fits the approved curriculum of the department. PHS is conservative in protecting the autonomy of the faculty and the goals of the curriculum. Credit for life experience is granted only when a student’s learning from life experiences duplicates the content of a course described in the catalog. To initiate this process, students should first reach out to their PHS faculty advisor to acquire the Credit for Prior Learning form. The PHS curriculum committee will evaluate the credit to determine if it is equivalent to the content of the requested course. The completed form is then submitted to the director of undergraduate programs, streamlining the process for the student, and ensuring the credit is accurately reflected on their transcript.
Exercise Science
Wichita State’s exercise science program is for those interested in careers involving exercise physiology, sport performance, strength and conditioning, health promotion, clinical exercise-related fields, physical and occupational rehabilitation, medicine, biology of exercise, research and academia or graduate education in health-related fields. The department also has a comprehensive human performance laboratory that is available for students completing exercise science coursework and applied experiential learning.
Human Performance Studies Activity Program
The Human Performance Studies Activity Program represents a variety of 1-credit-hour courses in areas including team activities, individual activities, combatives, fitness activities and aquatics. Activity courses in the service program may be repeated for credit. Students should consult their college requirements to ascertain whether the activity courses will count toward degree requirements.
