CHIN - Chinese

Courses numbered 100 to 299 = lower-division; 300 to 499 = upper-division; 500 to 799 = undergraduate/graduate.

CHIN 104.  Introductory Chinese I   (3).

Introduces the Chinese language with emphasis on the fundamentals of phonetics, listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as gaining an understanding of Chinese culture. Intended for students with no previous formal instruction in Chinese.

CHIN 105.  Elementary Chinese I   (3).

Students continue learning the basic skills of listening to, speaking, reading and writing of Chinese for everyday communication, as well as gaining competence in Chinese culture. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 104 or departmental consent.

CHIN 106.  Elementary Chinese II   (3).

Students further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students learn more useful expressions and the advanced sentence structures necessary for use in day-to-day life. Different aspects of Chinese culture and society are introduced as well. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 105 or departmental consent.

CHIN 210.  Intermediate Chinese   (5).

Designed to be a seamless continuation of the elementary level by building on the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as helping learners better understand contemporary Chinese society and be able to discuss and analyze cultural differences. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 112 or two units of high school Chinese or departmental consent.
